Here are the Top 8 Sistas
Sista with the Fro is a passion project created to celebrate and amplify the beauty, strength, and individuality of African women through their natural afro hair. It began as a vision to honour the diverse stories that hair can tell—a medium of expression and identity that connects African women to their roots and culture.
The journey started with an in-depth preproduction process, involving meticulous planning and collaboration. The team carefully scouted and selected the final 8 Sistas from a pool of exceptional candidates, ensuring their stories represented a rich tapestry of experiences with natural hair. Each Sista brought her unique perspective, contributing to a collective narrative that is both inspiring and authentic.
Behind the scenes, a crew of 10 dedicated creatives worked passionately to bring this vision to life. From myself, the creator and director driving the project, to the executive producers who secured funding, and from the DOPs and photographers capturing the essence of each moment to the production assistants ensuring every detail was seamless, every role was executed with unwavering commitment to excellence. This diverse team fostered a collaborative environment that celebrated creativity and innovation at every stage.
More than just a film, "Sista with the Fro" is a proof-of-concept project that showcases the power of storytelling to celebrate Africanness while creating meaningful opportunities for creatives across the country. By ensuring everyone involved, from the 8 Sistas sharing their stories to the 10 production crew members, was fairly compensated, the project set a high standard for equity and inclusivity in creative productions.
This initiative is only the beginning. It aims to ignite a broader movement to celebrate African identity, share untold stories, and support more creatives in future projects. "Sista with the Fro" is a heartfelt reminder that when we tell our own stories, we empower others to embrace their truth and inspire a global audience to celebrate diversity in its purest form.
